Sustainability Studies @ RPI - Minor
Sustainability Studies focuses on the interactions between various systems - social, political, cultural, economic, technological and ecological - that undergird environmental sustainability. The Department of Science and Technology Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute now offers an undergraduate minor in Sustainability Studies, in which students can learn to anticipate and identify these interactions and to think creatively about how interlinked systems work and can be transformed.
The minor is open to students pursuing degrees across campus, including those in engineering, the sciences, arts and humanities, architecture, and management. Courses applied to the Sustainability Studies minor focus on the human dimensions of environmental problems. They emphasize the importance of interdisciplinary expertise and collaboration to understand how different forms of knowledge can contribute to environmental solutions. Class projects and research opportunities provide students with the opportunity to cultivate their analytic and communication skills and to develop their ability to design workable and fair sustainability programs.
The minor in Sustainability Studies requires 4 courses (16 credits):
